It’s more than fixing a leak or building a ramp.
Our Critical Home Repair and Aging in Place program helps existing homeowners remain in their home by addressing needed repairs or modifications. For many homeowners, the biggest concern isn't just the rotting stairs or a malfunctioning furnance- it's whether they'll be able to continue living safely in the place they call home.

Critical Home Repairs
THE PROJECT
The Critical Home Repair program focuses on providing urgent repairs to income-qualified homeowners in the Greater Bangor area. While every need is unique, we prioritize projects to keep homeowners WARM, SAFE and DRY.
Repairs are performed by our construction staff with the help of community volunteers and partner contractors when licensed trades are required.
ELIGIBILITY
You may qualify if:

Your housing is inaccessible or unsafe

You do not have the ability to obtain a conventional loan to complete the work

Disability, age, or illness prevents you from completing the work yourself
WHAT'S COVERED
We may be able to assist with:

Carpentry based projects such as upgrading exterior doors and windows.

Accessibility issues such as steps and ramps
-
Heat-related repairs or system replacements - depending on funding. **

Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Electrical or Plumbing needs.
PAYMENT POLICY

Habitat will contribute up to $1500 per project. If the scope of the work is estimated to exceed the limit, efforts will be made to identify additional funds or loan options.

Homeowners may apply for assistance only once within a 24 month period.
AGING IN PLACE
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines aging in place as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.”
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor works to help older adults age at home and in communities of their choice through our Aging in Place program. We collaborate with local human services organizations to evaluate individual needs and provide home repairs, modifications and referrals to community services specific to each homeowner’s lifestyle in order to preserve their home and their independence.
