Originally founded in 1988, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor (HFHGB) is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. There are over 1,600 local Habitat affiliates worldwide. The Habitat movement seeks to eliminate substandard, poverty dwellings, and to make decent, affordable housing for everyone a matter of conscience and action.
Habitat for Humanity invites people of all backgrounds, races, religions and belief systems to build houses together in partnership with low-income families in need. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. The houses then are sold to “partner families” at no profit and with no interest charged. Mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
The Habitat for Humanity International web site, www.habitat.org, contains more information on Habitat's history, mission, volunteer opportunities and contact information for other Habitat affiliates around the world.
