Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor welcomes home a new homeowner to Hampden!

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor is proud to announce that we wrapped up 2022 with the completion of our 27th house build! Our newest partnering homeowner moved into her new Habitat home in Hampden just in time for the holidays.

Desiree Lilly (pictured on the right with her youngest child) is a hard-working, single mother of four sons. She lived in a small, two-bedroom apartment with her youngest sons, and space was hard to come by. After more than a year of planning and construction, she was thrilled to move into this 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom home.

This house was brought to life through the hands of many, including more than 75 volunteers and a collaboration with the Eastern Maine Community College Building, Construction and Fine Woodworking program. Their students constructed much of the house and custom-built the kitchen cabinets.

Desiree's home dedication ceremony took place on December 13, 2022, to a celebratory crowd of community members and news crews. After several warm remarks and ceremonial gifts presented, all were welcomed to explore the home, just a few weeks away from its final inspection. The new appliances shone brightly, and bedrooms gleamed with fresh paint as well-wishers stopped to congratulate the new homeowner.

"Without this program, I would not have been able to accomplish my dream of having a house for my family to call home, shares Desiree. "I am grateful for the help of each person, business, friend, and family member who made this dream possible."

Like all Habitat homeowners, Desiree and her family participated in Habitat for Humanity's homeownership program. The homeowner is receives an affordable mortgage, completes "sweat equity" hours into the home's construction, and participates in financial literacy courses.

"We are thrilled to be able to provide local families with a safe, affordable place to call home," says Melissa Huston, Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor. "This home is a testament to the power of community. We are grateful for our volunteers' hard work and dedication, and for the support of our donors."

Welcome home, Desiree!
